Substandard Housing

Definition

Housing unit for which householder has reported at least one of the following conditions on the Census: overcrowding (more than one person per room), lack of complete plumbing facilities, lack of complete kitchen facilities, or no heating fuel used.

Where to Find Data on this Site

  1. The Housing Stock Characteristics section of the Comparisons area provides a table for Substandard Housing Units, 1990.
  2. The General Unit Characteristics tool includes a table with the number of units in each substandard housing category entitled Housing Condition Characteristics, 2000. A single unit may appear in more than one category. For an unduplicated count of units appearing in one or more substandard housing category, see the Substandard Housing Unit Condition Summary, 1990 table under the same tool.
  3. Part IIA of the AHNA Quick Report includes the Housing Condition Characteristics, 2000 table, while Part IIB provides the Total Substandard Units, 1990 table.
  4. The Special Needs Household Characteristics: Substandard Housing, Income, and Cost Burden tool allows the user to create counts of households cross-tabulating substandard housing conditions with one or more of the following indicators: presence of a person with a disability age 15 or older, household income as a percentage of area median income, and cost burden.
